Digital Versus Analog In-Flight Entertainment and Cabin Management Systems

Miles of IFE and CMS Wiring
A wide body aircraft such as a 747 or Airbus A320 can have miles of cables and wiring linking the components of it's Cabin Management and In-Flight Entertainment Systems. This creates unique problems for audio and video being relayed through the cables to the many monitors and screens in the cabin.

Analog
Analog wiring and signals are fine for home entertainment systems traveling a few feet or yards through your living room. But when sent through the long distances of a wide body aircraft distortion and noise reduce the quality of the signal degrading the quality of the In-Flight Entertainment and Cabin Management Systems. For early IFE and CMS systems before digital technology was introduced this was a major restraint on system design and where and the quality of In-Flight Entertainment that could be enjoyed.

Digital
As the digital technology was developed a few companies saw potential for improving the quality and versatility of Cabin Management and In-Flight Entertainment. One of the first companies to do this was Custom Control Concepts. Although, many companies have followed in CCC's footsteps, but still use some analog wiring and signal for certain components. Custom Control Concepts is set apart by having the only all digital IFE and CMS systems on the market today. The great thing about digital wiring and signal is that no matter how many miles of cable are required for the aircraft's IFE and CMS systems there is never any loss of signal, distortion or noise. This ensures that your HD In-Flight Entertainment always comes through at full quality with no degradation and no buffering.

So when selecting a supplier for your IFE and CMS be sure to ask about their wiring and signal technology. Some analog may be OK if it is only traveling short distance, but full digital will ensure that your In-Flight Entertainment and Cabin Management Systems are flexible and powerful.
